The Edgar B. Speer in the Ship Canal; Duluth, Minnesota
These 1000 foot lake boats were designed to fit the Poe Lock at the Soo. They are massive, powerful, and slightly less pretty than a cement block. But when they loom out of frost smoke, they're very impressive and even mysterious.
The locks at Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Ontario closed for the season on Thursday, January 15. The Edgar B. Speer and Edwin H. Gott were the last Lakers to arrive in Duluth for winter lay-up on Friday, January 16, 2009. They had quite a fight with ice and arrived better than two days late.
The Edgar B. Speer is 1004 feet long and was launched in 1980. For more information:
