Christmas Eve, and I'm snowed out of my Eve celebration. So are a lot of other people around here, I expect. I like snow, and it's been a good storm so far. Herewith, a few of the new snow from this morning's beautiful snowshoe hike. Plus a couple of ice lanterns, one more abstract than the other. The storm is forecast to continue through Saturday. My Christmas Day and Boxing Day guests are all in town, so they should be able to make it. In the meanwhile, time for a bit of dinner, and then to bake the bread. Have a Christmas!

Tim Voss > Ice Lantern 2 Mary made ice lanterns for Christmas this year. I was intrigued... For those of you who don't know, an ice lantern is simply a hollow mass of ice with a candle placed inside. To make one, pour water into a largish container, let it freeze partially, then pour out the liquid water from the middle. Put the lantern wherever you want it, (usually along the front sidewalk), add the candle, and light it. This only works in subfreezing weather. Tim Voss > Ice Lantern Mary made ice lanterns for Christmas this year. I was intrigued... A much softer version. I rather like the ethereal effect. Tim Voss > Merry Christmas (Thank God They're Securely Fenced) Every useable square foot of this yard has been filled with inflatable and moving lawn decorations. They're even on the garage roof. You can hear the whooshes and hums of blowers and servo motors over the sounds of slowing or stopping traffic and the crying of frightened children. If your aesthetic sense is tickled by such displays, (in one way or another), it's worth a visit.
Tim Voss > The Sidewalk(s) Not Taken (with apologies to Robert Frost and anybody who likes inflatable lawn decorations) Two sidewalks diverged before the ornaments, And sorry I could not travel both, And be one traveler, long I stood, And looked down one as far as I could, To where it vanished in the darkness; Then took in the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because the snowmen might be brighter; Though as for that, those passing there, Would find them really about the same. And both that night equally lay, Beckoning on and trodden black. Oh, I kept them both for another day! Even knowing how way leads on to way, Barring sickness I was certain to come back. I shall be telling this with a smile, Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two sidewalks diverged before the ornaments, and I -- I drove home and had some eggnog with a tot of rum, And that has made all the difference.
Tim Voss > Happy Holidays! If you bothered to look at the previous two images, you might be wondering why I did this. It's a simple answer. I wanted to see what a yard and garage covered with inflatable and motorized lawn ornaments would look like in black and white. Then I wondered if I could make it look even more ominous and threatening and creeepy than it does in reality. Perhaps I have succeeded. If you haven't looked at the previous two images, might I suggest that you do so?
Tim Voss > Cut Face Creek; Cook County, Minnesota Most of the year, Cut Face Creek doesn't have a lot of flow. During spring runoff and after a big thunderstorm, however, it can turn into a torrent. Those rare times of heavy flow expose these sandstone cut banks. Sandstone is a rare thing along the North Shore of Lake Superior where nearly all the rock is volcanic with basalt and rhyolite very common. In fact, the sandstone here is made of old rhyolite grains. You can find fossil ripple marks on loose stones. They come from beaches that vanished over a billion years ago.
Tim Voss > Tomobolo; Cook County, Minnesota Tombolos are islands connected to the mainland by a gravel or sandbar. This one is located on Lake Superior several miles northeast of Grand Marais, Minnesota.
Tim Voss > Grass with Snow I thought the grass made a nice pattern here. There wasn't much snow on this trip.

Tim Voss > Ten in the Morning in an Empty Room This empty room is part of the Art Colony in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Can't say why exactly, but something here appealed to me, so I took the photo. Tim Voss > Wave Coming; Tofte, Minnesota One can go through a lot of exposures when shooting waves. This was one of the keepers. It wasn't quite as close as it looks. But one wave did catch a mitten. Fortunately, it was waterproof, but that didn't stop an instant crust of ice from forming around it. Water freezes quickly at ten above. This one came from Temperance River State Park.
