Winter > Tim Voss  > Lake Superior: Landscapes, Cityscapes and Ships > North Shore of Lake Superior in Winter, December 2008
It was time for my annual search for early cold and snow on the North Shore. This year didn't offer the deep snow that last year did, but there were some beautiful smaller snowstorms. There was lots of cold weather, too, including the final night when the thermometer pushed minus twenty Fahrenheit. That morning offered up some very impressive frost smoke from the open water of Lake Superior.

Tim Voss > The Gorge, Cascade River, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

The lowest series of falls on the Cascade have formed a deep and narrow gorge. Here's a view straight down into it. The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.

Tim Voss > Snowy Woodpile; Hovland, Minnesota

A good woodpile is money in the bank and warmth in the house. This pile belongs to a friend of mine who lives near Hovland. It's a good nest egg.
Tim Voss > Hovland Dock; Hovland, Minnesota

I love Hovland because it's the only North Shore community not blighted by condos and other kinds of development. You can still get a hint of what the North Shore was like in the old days. This is the town dock. Before Highway 61 was built in the 1920's, every community of any size on the North Shore had a dock like this for the package steamers and fish tugs to moor. This is the only one I know of that's still in reasonable shape. The rest are gone or reduced to a few ruined rock and wood cribs. The foundations in the middle-ground once supported a small warehouse.

Tim Voss > Old Gas Boat, Net Reel, Fish Shack, Falling Snow; Hovland, Minnesota

Wooden fish shacks, net reels, and wooden Mackinaw boats, like this one, were once common on the North Shore and Isle Royal. Mackinaw boats were originally sail powered. Engines were used in later years, changing them to gas boats. Power plants ranged from converted Model T and Buick engines to more expensive marine engines by Gray Marine and Red Wing.
Tim Voss > Along Chicago Bay; Hovland, Minnesota

A few fish shacks still line the shore at Hovland.
Tim Voss > The McFarland Pines; Cook County, Minnesota

These trees are part of a stand of old growth red and white pines along the Arrowhead Trail, north of Hovland.
