Winter > Tim Voss  > Lake Superior: Landscapes, Cityscapes and Ships > North Shore of Lake Superior in Winter, December 2008
It was time for my annual search for early cold and snow on the North Shore. This year didn't offer the deep snow that last year did, but there were some beautiful smaller snowstorms. There was lots of cold weather, too, including the final night when the thermometer pushed minus twenty Fahrenheit. That morning offered up some very impressive frost smoke from the open water of Lake Superior.

Tim Voss > Before a Snowstorm, Temperance River State Park; Schroeder, Minnesota

A snowstorm is coming and the sun grows dim through the thickening clouds. For a little while, the light takes on a silvery tone that I love.

There's a long history of heavy industry along the North Shore. Prior to the 1960's, it was mostly limited to Duluth and Two Harbors and the space between them. Taconite mining changed that. Processing plants and harbors were constructed at Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor. Both were company towns and both rose and fell with the fortunes of the mining industry. The Taconite Harbor town-site is abandoned now. The steam plume in this photo is from the harbor and loading facility power plant which is still in operation.

Tim Voss > Icy Falls, Cascade River, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

The Cascade River drops over many waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. This is the last, and the most photographed, of the falls. Cold winter weather changed it considerably! The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.

Tim Voss > Rime Ice on White Cedar, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

Mist from falls on the Cascade River forms rime ice on everything it touches. I thought this little branch was especially pretty.
Tim Voss > Tree in Ice, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

Like many North Shore rivers, ice often chokes the Cascade. Then water backs up and freezes. That's how this little tree ended up surrounded by ice. The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.
