It was time for my annual search for early cold and snow on the North Shore. This year didn't offer the deep snow that last year did, but there were some beautiful smaller snowstorms. There was lots of cold weather, too, including the final night when the thermometer pushed minus twenty Fahrenheit. That morning offered up some very impressive frost smoke from the open water of Lake Superior.
Sugarloaf Cove; Cook County, Minnesota
Sugarloaf Cove was once used as a harbor for massive log rafts that were towed across Lake Superior to Ashland, Wisconsin or up the lake to Duluth, Minnesota. Those days are long over. Now it's a privately administered natural area that preserves some very interesting volcanic formations and rare native plants. Sugarloaf Point, as seen in the photo, is a tombolo. Tombolos are islands connected to the mainland by a beach. Artist's Point, in Grand Marais, Minnesota, is another tombolo.
