Cities > Tim Voss  > Lake Superior: Landscapes, Cityscapes and Ships > Duluth, Minnesota; Superior, Wisconsin; Lake Superior: Cold
Some winter views of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. If the image looks cold, it was cold. I think there's a lot of beauty in deep winter and, hopefully, I've shared some of that. Cold as it was, it gets a lot colder in a lot of other places. One just dresses for the conditions and gets on with it. Toe warmers and a couple of hand warmers per mitten help a lot. The only real problems were frosting up the viewfinder and keeping the battery warm. For what it might be worth to anybody, dropping the battery into a mitten between shots helps keep it warm. Using two batteries, and alternating them, would work better. Just make sure you're wearing some thin polypropylene gloves, too. They really help when mittens are too awkward.

Tim Voss > The Atlantic Huron Passing Under the Aerial Lift Bridge; Duluth, Minnesota

I had just arrived in Duluth and I saw that the Lift Bridge was raised. So I made a dash to the Ship Canal and Canal park and arrived just in time for the Huron. She departed later that evening and was the last ship down-bound for the 2008 shipping season. During tourist time, the pier wall would be packed several people deep for a ship. In January, at 15 degrees Fahrenheit and falling, the place was almost deserted.

The Atlantic Huron was launched in 1983 and is 736 feet 6 inches long. She has seen service on salt water and the Great Lakes. For more information: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/atlantichuron.htm
Tim Voss > Tug Edward H; Duluth, Minnesota

Tugs don't usually tie up by the harbor cruise dock, so it was a surprise. Today, I discovered that the Edward H. was suffering from a small leak. According to the Duluth News Tribune, a diver went through a hole in the ice today and applied a temporary patch. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/109664/

The Edward H. was built in 1944 and is 86 feet long. She was originally built for the Army Corps of Engineers and is now privately owned.

Tim Voss > January Morning, Aerial Lift Bridge; Duluth, Minnesota

It was a cold morning when I took this one, something like twenty below Fahrenheit. Toe warmers and two hand-warmers per mitten made all the difference. No frost smoke, though, because the water was frozen! There's lots of interesting geometry in the Lift Bridge. Floodlights make it a stunning sight at night. So the cold didn't matter that much.

Duluth's iconic bridge began life in 1905 as an aerial transfer bridge. The gondola could carry over sixty tons and crossed the canal in one minute. Traffic to Minnesota Point overwhelmed the gondola and the bridge's conversion to a lift span was completed in 1930. It's highest point is 227 feet/69 meters above Lake Superior. The bridge has a fascinating history. Here's one link, if you're interested: http://nrhp.mnhs.org/property_overview.cfm?PropertyID=22

Tim Voss > January Morning on the Ship Canal; Duluth, Minnesota

It was a cold morning when I took this one, something like twenty below Fahrenheit. Toe warmers and two hand-warmers per mitten made all the difference. No frost smoke in the canal, though, because the water was frozen! Frost smoke can be seen along the horizon. The tower on the right is the Rear Range Light. This is the second light at this location and dates to 1901. It was recently sold to private parties, but remains an aid to navigation and is on the Historic Register.

Duluth's Ship Canal was originally cut through Minnesota Point in 1871. It was a private venture and very much opposed by Superior, Wisconsin. Superior had the natural entrance from St. Louis Bay and went to court to stop the Duluth interests. They failed and the rest, as they say, is history.

Tim Voss > Winter Lay-Up: American Victory and Lee A. Tregurtha at the Fraser Shipyards; Superior, Wisconsin

Several ships winter at the Fraser Shipyards where repairs and maintenance are attended to.
