Lake Superior: Landscapes, Cityscapes and Ships Galleries

Duluth, Minnesota; Superior, Wisconsin; Lake Superior: Cold : Some winter views of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. If the image looks cold, it was cold. I think there's a lot of beauty in deep winter and, hopefully, I've shared some of that. Cold as it was, it gets a lot colder in a lot of other places. One just dresses for the conditions and gets on with it. Toe warmers and a couple of hand warmers per mitten help a lot. The only real problems were frosting up the viewfinder and keeping the battery warm. For what it might be worth to anybody, dropping the battery into a mitten between shots helps keep it warm. Using two batteries, and alternating them, would work better. Just make sure you're wearing some thin polypropylene gloves, too. They really help when mittens are too awkward.

North Shore of Lake Superior in Winter, December 2008 : It was time for my annual search for early cold and snow on the North Shore. This year didn't offer the deep snow that last year did, but there were some beautiful smaller snowstorms. There was lots of cold weather, too, including the final night when the thermometer pushed minus twenty Fahrenheit. That morning offered up some very impressive frost smoke from the open water of Lake Superior.

North Shore of Lake Superior in Winter, December 2007 : Winter is my favorite season. The North Shore of Lake Superior is my favorite place on the planet. Here are some snowy and icy images taken over a week in December 2007. The trip began with a 12 to 18 inch dump of snow and ended with another 3 inches. It was cold and the snowshoeing was wonderful. Most of the photos were taken in Cascade River State Park and Grand Marais, Minnesota.
